FreeThe Walter N. Marks Center for the Arts is proud to present two new exhibitions this month.
The Other Side of Memory features photographs by Luis C. Garza, featuring images that document the Chicano photographer’s East Los Angeles community during the early 1970s, his South Bronx neighborhood during the 1960s, and his 1971 travels to Budapest, Hungary, for the World Peace Conference where he met Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros.
Xicano Topography features an eclectic selection of Chicano artists are denizens of an expansive Xicano landscape. The artists deal with the universality of the human condition but through the lens of their Mexican-American experience. They do not employ the expected or popular visual cues. Instead, they have built their own language that fills in and maps out the topography that adds to the rich and complex tapestry of the Chicano tradition.
