SUMMARY:Art Exhibition Monumentally Fragile: Catherine Ruane\, David Tomb\, and Holly Wong
DESCRIPTION:College of the Desert is pleased to announce that a new exhibition of large-scale paper works entitled “Monumentally Fragile” is on display now through March 28 at the Marks Art Center. \nThere will also be a closing reception and artists’ walk through on Friday\, March 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. \nCurated by Ray Beldner\, artist and Director of Startup Curatorial\, the exhibit brings together large works on paper by Catherine Ruane (Morongo Valley\, CA)\, David Tomb (Marin\, CA)\, and Holly Wong (San Francisco\, CA). \nThe title of the show\, “Monumentally Fragile\,” refers both to the scale the artists employ in making their work\, and to the fragility of their material\, which is paper. It also refers to the precariousness of their subject matter\, which is often nature: trees\, birds\, water—even our “life force.” They each use multiple smaller paper pieces to build their compositions and\, in the process of installation\, map out\, occupy\, and define space. \nPaper\, which is both a humble and mutable material\, is a perfect metaphor for the tenuous state of the world which these artists find themselves in. Working passionately and insistently\, they ask us to consider the beauty of this world and what we may be close to losing. \nThe exhibit is open to the public Tuesday through Friday\, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. \nThe Walter N. Marks Center for the Arts (MAC) is a nonprofit facility that supports arts education and enriches the cultural lives of our students\, faculty\, and community. The MAC is at 43500 Monterey Ave.\, Palm Desert. The gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday\, and by appointment. \nFor more information\, please contact the Marks Art Center at (760) 776-7278 or visit them on Instagram @marksartcenter. \n  \n  \n  \nExhibition dates 1/28/2023-3/24/2023

SUMMARY:Bending the Arc: Embracing our Core Values
DESCRIPTION:Local Justice Leaders to be Honored March 10 in Palm Springs \nPalm Springs\, California – Coachella Valley leaders of women farmworkers and black gay men will be honored for their justice work at the 14th annual Spring Fling and Silent Auction fundraiser benefiting Bloom in the Desert Ministries UCC (Bloom) of Palm Springs\, March 10\, 2023\, starting at 5:30 pm\, at the Palm Springs Pavilion. All are welcome to make paid reservations and find more information at https://bloominthedesert.org/spring-fling-14/. \nThe 9th annual Community Justice Award honorees include Mily Treviño-Sauceda\, executive director of the National Alliance of Farmworker Women\, a nonprofit organization advocating for the safety and rights of women laborers in agriculture. Also\, an organization is being honored with this justice award for the first time. Brothers of the Desert\, a Palm Springs non-profit community group\, was selected for local advocacy supporting Black gay men and their allies. \nEvent chairs Elaine Wang-Meyerhoffer and Paul Gibb report\, “This will be an evening of justice and joy. We are back in person after online Fling events for two years. The entertainment headliner is the DC6 Singers Collective\, an LA-based vocal a Capella ensemble singing dynamic and energetic gospel and Motown tunes. Emcee Darci Daniels will host the evening including Strong Words story tellers\, DJ Tina Turntables\, Too Tall Tomm on stilts\, the silent auction\, festival booths hosting various justice ministries\, and food from four local vendors.
