SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: The Other Side of Memory and Xicano Topography
DESCRIPTION:The Walter N. Marks Center for the Arts is proud to present two new exhibitions this month. \nThe Other Side of Memory features photographs by Luis C. Garza\, featuring images that document the Chicano photographer’s East Los Angeles community during the early 1970s\, his South Bronx neighborhood during the 1960s\, and his 1971 travels to Budapest\, Hungary\, for the World Peace Conference where he met Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros. \nXicano Topography features an eclectic selection of Chicano artists are denizens of an expansive Xicano landscape. The artists deal with the universality of the human condition but through the lens of their Mexican-American experience. They do not employ the expected or popular visual cues. Instead\, they have built their own language that fills in and maps out the topography that adds to the rich and complex tapestry of the Chicano tradition.  Artists exhibiting : Abel Alejandre (image included) \, Linda Arreola\, Jose Lozano\, and CiCi Segura Gonzalez. \nArtist Reception and Walk-Through April 13\, 5-7 p.m.  \nLive Music during the reception featuring Cálmala 6 – 7pm \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Chicago Blues coming to Palm Springs for a Blues Brothers Tribute!\n\n\nIts been 45 years since Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi debuted the their much loved Chicago Blues tribute on Saturday Night Live. Enjoy this tribute to the Blues Brothers by the Gand Band featuring Dion Khan and Short Stack Steve on vocals\, horn section Chris Eliot and Kenyon Carter\, “Booker T” Joan\, Gary “Cropper” Gand and some surprise guests!  \n \nWinner of the CV Independent’s Best Local Band for three years running\, this dynamic husband and wife team bring their Chicago sound to the desert.  \nVeteran bluesman Gary Gand handles the six strings\, driving the band\, channeling a bit of Freddie King\, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck rolled into one. Keyboardist Joan Gand grooves on classic Hammond B-3 style organ and blues piano with inspiration from Booker T\, Ray Charles\, and Otis Spann\, all while her left hand is laying down the bass. \nThroughout this series of 3 concerts\, special guests will join the Gand Band including top notch performers from both Chicago and San Diego. \nThe Gand Band appears in the new film\,”My Name is Lopez” – a documentary about 60s celebrity vocalist/actor Trini Lopez.
