SUMMARY:Problematic Palms
DESCRIPTION:Problematic Palms \n  \nFeaturing new and recent work by Osceola Refetoff\, Francesca Bifulco & Andrew K. Thompson. Curated by Shana Nys Dambrot. \n  \nCollege of the Desert\, Marks Art Center\, Palm Desert \ncollegeofthedesert.edu \n  \nExhibition Dates: November 7 – December 15\, 2023 \nOpening Reception: Wednesday\, November 15\, featuring an ekphrastic spoken word program curated by Ruth Nolan of COD’s Creative Writing Department \n  \nPalm trees are found around the world—and yet are particularly associated with Southern California\, Los Angeles even more so. Both non-native and emblematic\, they embody a curious paradox such as befits a city and region like ours\, built on layers of arrivals that initially displaced Native Peoples and has kept right on displacing—along lines of class\, race\, and immigration status and at the hands of capital-driven development. \n  \nThe palm tree has emerged as a symbol of status and a curious kind of social luxury\, but it has also endured as a resolutely feral and tenacious botanical population\, and muse to countless artists\, architects\, musicians\, and filmmakers throughout generations. \n  \nAs these three assembled artists take on SoCal’s palm trees as both symbols and living things\, their more complex aspects emerge—fire-ravaged\, beacons of dreams and of isolation\, the iconic silhouettes of sunshine and noir; interfered with by industry\, transplant beloved of environmentally devastating real estate schemes; decor for seats of all kinds of power from civic institutions to Hollywood studios\, guardian angel of the Palm Springs proto-Pop modernist fantasy and its untenable appetite for groundwater; avatars for the role of humans in making the way the world the way it is now. \n  \nIn Andrew K. Thompson’s various photography-based modalities\, the palm occupies a place of prominence as a literal and figurative lightning rod. By casting them in the starring roles of his meditations on power and purgatory\, before puncturing\, piercing\, stitching\, chemically distressing the prints and otherwise complexifying the viewer’s expectations\, Thompson involves conceptual histories of photographic process with a nuanced assessment of today’s visual culture—and how it all feeds into the way we are treating the world and one another. \n  \nFrancesca Bifulco works in expressive\, richly detailed and intricate paintings and explosive (sometimes literally) sculptural installations\, bringing all the senses and a variety of mediums to bear on her fascination with the palm trees of Southern California. With an appreciation for both poetry and spectacle\, a fearlessness when it comes to collaborating with formidable found and natural materials\, and an emotional patience for close attention to her subjects\, Bifulco treats her palm trees as anthropomorphic portrait subjects\, stand-ins for her own fraught journey to America\, and as fuel for the fires of her dimensional imagination. \nOsceola Refetoff’s work with multi-spectral exposures creates arresting infrared images of iconic Palm Springs neighborhoods’ architecture\, landscape design\, and encroaching wild nature. The impossibly rich chromatic character of the work is in conversation with both Pop art and the technology of scientific survey; the assertive beauty they express contains the unease of invisible color\, an inverted dance of naturalism and surrealism\, and the seeds of a deeper consideration about the viability of putting a town in the desert in the first place. Lovely\, sparkling\, water-intensive\, manicured\, natural\, unnatural\, otherworldly\, seductive\, subversive—paradisiacal and problematic.

SUMMARY:Idyllwild Arts Partners with Stan’s Cafe to Present “Of All The People in All The World” Exhibition from February 6 to 14 with a Celebratory Event on February 9
DESCRIPTION:The InterArts Department at Idyllwild Arts is pleased to present a special collaboration between its students and UK-based interactive theatre company\, Stan’s Cafe. “Of All The People in All The World” is an internationally-acclaimed performance installation that turns abstract human population statistics into emotionally gripping stories using grains of rice. The public is invited to view Idyllwild Arts iteration “Of All The People in All The World” at a Celebratory Reception on Friday\, February 9 from 6 to 7.30pm\, featuring InterArts students and Stan’s Café founders\, James Yarker and Graeme Rose. The free event takes place at the Parks Exhibition Gallery located on Idyllwild Arts stunning campus (52500 Temecula Road #38\, Idyllwild\, CA). The unique exhibition will also run from February 6 – 14\, 2024. \nThe rice is carefully measured to represent human population statistics arranged in labelled piles\, creating an ever-changing landscape of rice. Their juxtapositions can be moving\, shocking\, celebratory\, witty and thought-provoking. That’s it. This installation is that simple—and that elegantly complex. After the performance the rice will be donated to charities and recycled. \n“Of All The People In All The World” has toured the world since its inception in 2003\, landing at top international venues\, including The Kennedy Center in Washington DC and the World Financial Center in New York\, adapting to the times and contexts in which it is found. SUMMARY:“Winston Churchill – Making Art\, Making History” Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Heather James Fine Art presents a selection of ten paintings by Winston Churchill on exhibition through May 31 at the Gallery on Portola in Palm Desert\, and online at heatherjames.com. Originating from a single-family owner\, the artworks are from the largest private collection of Churchill’s paintings outside of the United Kingdom\, and have never been exhibited publicly. The general public knows less of Churchill as a painter than as one of the world’s greatest statesmen and Nobel Prize winning writer. His paintings played a critical role in his life\, offering another way to understand this towering figure. \n“Heather James is thrilled to present this superb selection of paintings by Winston Churchill\,” says Heather James Fine Art Co-Founder Jim Carona. “Not only was Churchill one of the greatest statesmen of the modern era\, but his personal foray into painting showcased his inner workings with resulting artworks that are technically adept and aesthetically beautiful. These works read like pages out of his diary\, mementos of the moments and places that were meaningful to one of the most important men of his day. We at Heather James have had the honor of working closely with Churchill’s family and his oeuvre in the past and consider his works a specialty of ours. It is a joy to be able to share these phenomenal examples.” \nThe paintings are on exhibit and offered for sale\, and include bold landscapes\, a vibrant still life\, and a quiet interior portrait. It was the Impressionist influence and his own pleasure that most likely made landscapes the genre of choice for Churchill. Painting en plein air was a hallmark for the Impressionists and so too did Churchill haul his paints and canvas outdoors and into nature. Looking at a landscape painting by Churchill is like reading a page of his diary. Given the many demands on his time and his accomplishments both as a politician and as a writer\, the quality and productivity of his artistic output is difficult to fathom. \nFor nearly 30 years\, Heather James Fine Art has expanded into a global network with galleries located in Palm Desert\, California\, and Jackson Hole\, Wyoming\, along with consultancies in New York City\, London\, Los Angeles\, San Francisco\, Montecito\, Newport Beach\, Palm Beach\, Basel in Switzerland\, and Lake Como in Italy. Each year\, the galleries present an array of museum-quality exhibitions exploring historical and contemporary themes or examining the work of individual influential artists. \nFor more information about the collection of Winston Churchill paintings and Heather James Fine Art\, please contact us at brent@heatherjames.com or call (760) 346-8926.
