DESCRIPTION:The Walter N. Marks Center for the Arts is proud to present two new exhibitions this month. \nThe Other Side of Memory features photographs by Luis C. Garza\, featuring images that document the Chicano photographer’s East Los Angeles community during the early 1970s\, his South Bronx neighborhood during the 1960s\, and his 1971 travels to Budapest\, Hungary\, for the World Peace Conference where he met Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros. \nXicano Topography features an eclectic selection of Chicano artists are denizens of an expansive Xicano landscape. The artists deal with the universality of the human condition but through the lens of their Mexican-American experience. They do not employ the expected or popular visual cues. When you catch Nathan pickin’ and scratchin’ on his own invention of washboard guitar\, while fronting his band the ‘Rhythm Scratchers’\, you are sure to be moved and impressed with a truly original sound. Together they draw from a deep well of influences in the American roots rhythm and blues genres.  \nMembers of the band were first call musicians for the late blues legend James Harman. They also regularly back up blues legends Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds\, as well as Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers. DESCRIPTION:Darnell Cole and the Vibe LIVE in Palm Springs\n\n\nDarnell “Big D” Cole is an Independent Rock/Americana artist. As a Blues and Soul musician\, his art is centered around his captivating electric guitar\, taking one on a journey emotionally and spiritually.\nIn 2011\, he released his first solo\, acoustic album: “Loving Antics”\, followed up by “On the low” and “For the First Time”. A young Darnell was ambitious for bigger and better things\, eventually leading to the start of blues rock band: Porcelain Hill.\nDarnell\, at the helm of Porcelain Hill\, would go on to tour 9 different countries\, all booked and setup by himself\, as well as write and release 2 more albums\, and an EP. During this period he would really cut his teeth\, opening up for/sharing the stage with more established artists such as Missing Persons\, Iron Butterfly\, Sister Sledge\, Dru Hill\, John Illsley\, The Wailers\, Ana Popovic\, Walter Trout\, Robert Jon & The Wreck\, Bernie Marsden and more! During this time\, Big D became a Vintage Guitars Endorser\, receiving the honor of having several signature/custom guitars with the company\, as well as being featured on several of their publications.\n\nIn 2019\, he booked a 6 month UK tour for Porcelain Hill\, and led the band to victory in several Battle of the Bands despite having bass player lineup changes. This was also the year he really started to breakout individually\, earning a spot performing at the Electric Picnic festival in Ireland\, alongside such artists as Amy Montgomery\, The Strokes\, Billie Eilish\, and The 1975 to name a few.\n \nDesert Blues Revival at the Cascade Lounge offers state-of-the-art sound and lighting with pristine acoustics and plush seating. \nThings to know before you go: \n• Must be 21 or over. \n• Doors open at 6pm with a 7pm showtime. \n• Drinks served throughout the show. \n• No refunds except for COVID-related shutdown. \n• Free covered parking in attached garage. \nWe cannot take cash at the door (casino policy). DESCRIPTION:Jazzville presents the Sean Hicke Quartet for a sublime evening of jazz in Palm Springs.\n\n\nDo yourself an inspirational favor and come hear Sean Hicke play bass with his equally\, exceptionally talented band mates. Sean released my favorite jazz album of 2019 titled Sunflower Sutra\, and I instantly wanted to book him at Jazzville. But he had moved to Ohio. Well\, I’m from Ohio so I knew he’d be back in California at some point\, and the time has come. \nSean wrote and arranged all eight compositions on Sunflower Sutra\, a sublime album which he also produced. One of the factors that makes Sunflower Sutra notable is the skill and musical empathy displayed by Hicke and his fresh-faced band mates. They include guitarist Louis Valenzuela\, vibraphonist Matt DiBiase and drummer Julien Cantelm. \nMany young musicians in their 20s would approach making their debut albums as a chance to show off and play as many notes as possible. Not Hicke\, who displays a level of artistic maturity beyond his years. His compositions are steeped in straight-ahead jazz traditions but not bound by them. \nHis bass teacher was the great Bob Magnusson\, whose credits range from a slew of jazz legends to the San Diego Symphony and albums by Linda Ronstadt\, Bonnie Raitt and Madonna. “Sean is a super talent\,” Magnusson says. “I am really proud of him.” \nJazzville at the Cascade Lounge offers state-of-the-art sound and lighting with pristine acoustics and plush seating. \nThings to know before you go: \n• Must be 21 or over. \n• Doors open at 6pm with a 7pm showtime. \n• Drinks served throughout the show. \n• No refunds except for COVID-related shutdown. \n• Free covered parking in attached garage. \nWe cannot take cash at the door (casino policy). He was runner up in the Sacramento Comedy Competition in both 2014 and 2015 and won it in 2018\, which featured more than 75 comics from all over the country. In 2017 He was a stand out in the Laughing Skull Festival in ATL\, and recently got best of fest at The SouthLand Festival in Los Angeles. Steve runs the monthly show Buried and Set of the Night at The World Famous Comedy Store\, and the weekly Bear City in Long Beach\, CA. Furey can currently be seen on E! as a co-host ofDating#NoFilter which just had a new season.
