DESCRIPTION:The City of Palm Desert is bringing live music back to the Civic Center Park amphitheater with a series of free\, weekly concerts throughout the month of May. Featuring a diverse range of talented performers designed to please music lovers of all ages and tastes\, the concerts will be held every Thursday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Pack your picnic baskets\, or enjoy delicious culinary creations offered by a variety of food trucks parked by the amphitheater. \n  \nPalm Desert’s Spring Concert Series closes out on Thursday\, May 25\, with the very best in Yacht Rock\, Yachty by Nature. Hailing from Southern California\, but playing from sea to shining sea\, this six-piece band will help you get yachty with your favorite groovy tunes from the late 70’s to early 80’s\, including those from Hall and Oates\, Steely Dan\, Toto\, Christopher Cross and so many more. \n  \nA certified American Sign Language interpreter will sign every concert in the series. Guests who might benefit from that service are welcome to sit near the east side of the stage for best viewing. \n  \nBring blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy the shows. Food and beverage trucks offering a wide variety of tasty choices are available one hour before each show. Alcoholic beverages and smoking are prohibited at Civic Center Park.

Released in 2021\, the film features songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton\,” “Moana”) and is directed by Byron Howard (“Zootopia\,” “Tangled”). Bring the kids\, towels\, a blanket and your swimsuits and be prepared to sing along and enjoy this interactive engaging tale. \nCost: \nTickets are $5 per person\, with no charge for children under 2 years old. DESCRIPTION:The Palm Springs Young Playwrights Festival (PSYPF) is an annual festival that showcases selected works from students as staged readings using professional actors and directors. The Fifth Annual festival will take place at the Palm Springs Cultural Center on June 4\, 2023 at 12 PM and will showcase three winning plays written by local high school students.  Plays written by two students from Valley View High School in Moreno Valley and one student from Riverside Polytechnic High School in Riverside were selected as this year’s winners. \n\n\n\n\n\nPSYPF promotes and encourages theatrical creative writing to all elementary\, middle\, and high school students within Riverside County. This year\, PSYPF received a record 39 submissions. Each play was reviewed by a special committee that selected the 2023 winners\, each on whom will receive a mentorship to enhance their playwriting skills\, a staged reading public performance of their play\, and a $500 scholarship to help further their career in the arts. \n\n\n\n\n\nPSYPF is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. DESCRIPTION:Jazzville presents a tribute to the sublime and controversial1962 jazz album\, Love Is a Drag\, performed by a top-shelf singer and quartet.\n\n\nJazzville presents a live tribute to the 1962 jazz album\, Love Is a Drag. Treasured by Bob Hope\, Liberace\, and Frank Sinatra (who gave away copies as gifts to many friends). So why did the album not reveal the singer and musicians? Why did the cover proclaim: For Adult Listeners Only\, and why did record stores keep it under the counter?.. \nThe album features a sincere crooner (a warm baritone in the style of Dick Haymes) interpreting jazz standards previously recorded only by women: My Man\, The Man I Love\, Mad About The Boy and nine similar tracks. How brave for a male signer to record these songs and do them so cooly without a hint of camp. And remember\, this was 1962. The word drag was code for gay\, yet everyone connected with the project was straight; the singer\, the band\, the producers… all straight. Quoting an article in JazzTimes\, “How the record ever happened still constitutes one of the unlikeliest tales in jazz.” \n50 years later we now know that the signer was Gene Howard\, a 1940s vocalist with the Stan Kenton band. The players on the album were LA’s top session guys including Al Viola\, the longtime guitarist for Frank Sinatra.  \nWriter David Sedaris heard the album at a dinner party. He later commented\, “Even now the album is shocking. When a woman sings\, ‘He isn’t true/He beats me\, too/What can I do?’ you don’t really hear how\, well\, pathetic it is. It’s not fair that when a guy sings\, ‘I’m wild again\, beguiled again\, a simpering\, whimpering child again\,’ you think\, Ease up\, buddy\, while you accept those lines from a woman.” \nThe story of this album is fascinating on many levels. And I (Barry) have wanted to do a tribute show to this record for years. I finally found the perfect singer\, Gavin Braun\, and the very best band to do this show in the same spirit that the album ensconces: Kevin van den Elzen on drums\, Jason Fabus on sax\, Adam Hersh on piano and Eric Sittner on bass. All festival week events are free and open to the public. \nIdyllwild Arts is an institution rooted in respect\, reverence\, and support for Native American people and is the only residential arts high school in the country to offer a Native American Arts program. This year’s Native American Arts Festival is again being led by Native American Executive Director\, Shaliyah Ben (Diné)\, whose vision will bring to life this year’s theme\, an examination and celebration of Native humor\, comedy and joy. After the past few difficult years\, humor is an important tool to help heal within while also coping with and accepting new realities. The unique week of programming seeks to inspire internal reflection and laughter while also igniting important conversations about topics that shape Indigenous communities by bringing together scientific\, intuitive\, and trickster voices for a balanced and provocative learning experience. \nHighlights of this year’s festival include the Opening Day Celebration “Welcoming Home the Birds\,” which is a full day of cultural programming and sharing of Cahuilla and Serrano Bird Singing. Attendees are invited to taste California Native Foods presented by Willie Pink (Luiseño). The week-long event\, which has run each summer for over two decades\, is designed to enhance and enrich the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program with Native American arts-based programming including an invitational exhibition\, demonstrations\, Native food tastings and the Michael Kabotie Lecture Series. All festival week events are free and open to the public. \nIdyllwild Arts is an institution rooted in respect\, reverence\, and support for Native American people and is the only residential arts high school in the country to offer a Native American Arts program. This year’s Native American Arts Festival is again being led by Native American Executive Director\, Shaliyah Ben (Diné)\, whose vision will bring to life this year’s theme\, an examination and celebration of Native humor\, comedy and joy. After the past few difficult years\, humor is an important tool to help heal within while also coping with and accepting new realities. The unique week of programming seeks to inspire internal reflection and laughter while also igniting important conversations about topics that shape Indigenous communities by bringing together scientific\, intuitive\, and trickster voices for a balanced and provocative learning experience. \nHighlights of this year’s festival include the Opening Day Celebration “Welcoming Home the Birds\,” which is a full day of cultural programming and sharing of Cahuilla and Serrano Bird Singing. Attendees are invited to taste California Native Foods presented by Willie Pink (Luiseño). There will be a short program of music and spoken word offerings by Sweet Baby J’ai\, Keisha D\, Richard Riley\, Anye Elite\, Perry Lang and others. We will also pay a special tribute to leader and trailblazer\, Gail Christian.   After the dinner we will continue the celebration with music and dancing . \nWe will also be holding a contest for the best Juneteenth cake with a prize of a gourmet gift basket. He appeared in the Byron Allen syndicated show “First Family”\, has appeared in several sketches for the Jimmy Kimmel Live Show\, and is also a part of Steve Carell’s new TBS pilot “Tribeca”.  \nOriginally from Venezuela\, Francisco moved to Washington D.C. in 1994. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 2004 with a double major of Finance and International Business. However\, after a short-lived desk job\, Francisco realized that his passion was comedy. He has been selected to perform in the CBS Multicultural Diversity Showcase\, where he was one of 12 selected from a pool of 5\,000 applicants.
