SUMMARY:Love is a Drag: The Shocking 1962 Jazz Album - LIVE!
DESCRIPTION:Jazzville presents a tribute to the sublime and controversial1962 jazz album\, Love Is a Drag\, performed by a top-shelf singer and quartet.\n\n\nJazzville presents a live tribute to the 1962 jazz album\, Love Is a Drag. Treasured by Bob Hope\, Liberace\, and Frank Sinatra (who gave away copies as gifts to many friends). So why did the album not reveal the singer and musicians? Why did the cover proclaim: For Adult Listeners Only\, and why did record stores keep it under the counter?.. \nThe album features a sincere crooner (a warm baritone in the style of Dick Haymes) interpreting jazz standards previously recorded only by women: My Man\, The Man I Love\, Mad About The Boy and nine similar tracks. How brave for a male signer to record these songs and do them so cooly without a hint of camp. And remember\, this was 1962. The word drag was code for gay\, yet everyone connected with the project was straight; the singer\, the band\, the producers… all straight. Quoting an article in JazzTimes\, “How the record ever happened still constitutes one of the unlikeliest tales in jazz.” \n50 years later we now know that the signer was Gene Howard\, a 1940s vocalist with the Stan Kenton band. The players on the album were LA’s top session guys including Al Viola\, the longtime guitarist for Frank Sinatra.  \nWriter David Sedaris heard the album at a dinner party. He later commented\, “Even now the album is shocking. When a woman sings\, ‘He isn’t true/He beats me\, too/What can I do?’ you don’t really hear how\, well\, pathetic it is. It’s not fair that when a guy sings\, ‘I’m wild again\, beguiled again\, a simpering\, whimpering child again\,’ you think\, Ease up\, buddy\, while you accept those lines from a woman.” \nThe story of this album is fascinating on many levels. And I (Barry) have wanted to do a tribute show to this record for years. I finally found the perfect singer\, Gavin Braun\, and the very best band to do this show in the same spirit that the album ensconces: Kevin van den Elzen on drums\, Jason Fabus on sax\, Adam Hersh on piano and Eric Sittner on bass. After the past few difficult years\, humor is an important tool to help heal within while also coping with and accepting new realities. He appeared in the Byron Allen syndicated show “First Family”\, has appeared in several sketches for the Jimmy Kimmel Live Show\, and is also a part of Steve Carell’s new TBS pilot “Tribeca”.  \nOriginally from Venezuela\, Francisco moved to Washington D.C. in 1994. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 2004 with a double major of Finance and International Business. However\, after a short-lived desk job\, Francisco realized that his passion was comedy. He has been selected to perform in the CBS Multicultural Diversity Showcase\, where he was one of 12 selected from a pool of 5\,000 applicants. He has also appeared in NUVO TV’s show “Latino 101″ and in the movie “Marmaduke” with Owen Wilson and George Lopez. She grew up in Toronto with her single mom and grandma until the age of 11 when her stepdad came into her life. Being an only child\, Nikki wasn’t the easiest kid to win over. She started acting at the age of 8 when she would play the role of “devil child”  to scare off her moms boyfriends by locking them in the basement or faking sick so they would go away. Her stepdad appreciated pranks so she allowed him to stay and Nikki decided take her performances outside of home.  \nShe studied acting at Queens University where she got a BAH in Theatre. After studying improv at Toronto’s Second City\, she moved to New York City to train at The Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB). While in New York\, Nikki also attended the Atlantic Acting School\, founded by playwright David Mamet and actor William H. Macy.  \nNikki moved to Los Angeles in 2014\, where she continued to perform with the UCB\, and completed Groundlings writing lab\, another prestigious improv academy who’s notable main company alumni includes Kristen Wiig\, Will Ferrell\, and Melissa McCarthy. Nikki has done stand-up at comedy clubs across North America\, including The Improv\, The Comedy Store\, Yuk Yuks\, Ice House\, and Comedy Bar\, to name a few. You can catch Nikki on season 14 of America’s Got Talent where she plays her iconic character “Insta Girl”. \nNikki is probably best known for her unhinged\, self-deprecating\, and dark humour. After all\, she has been in a bank robbery\, seen a plane crash and was recently reunited with her absentee dad who wasn’t around when she was growing up. Canned Heat attained three worldwide hits with their rock anthems “On The Road Again\,” “Going Up The Country\,” and “Let’s Work Together.” They secured their niche in rock ‘n roll history with their performances at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and a headlining slot at the original Woodstock Festival in 1969. \n \nNow\, more than fifty years later and with forty albums to their credit\, Canned Heat is still going strong. They have been anchored throughout the past fifty-three years by the steady hand of drummer/band leader and historian\, Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra. Continuing on into his twelfth year\, New Orleans’ legend\, Dale Spalding is on harmonica\, guitar and lead vocals and for the past two years\, inventive bassist\, Rick Reed became part of the lineup after stints with Paul Butterfield\, John Mayall and the Chicago Blues Reunion. The newest addition on lead guitar and vocals is the incredible Jimmy Vivino.
