DESCRIPTION:In honor of Black History Month\, Idyllwild Arts Academy announces its annual Black History jazz concert\, which is free and open to the public. The concert and will take place at the school’s stunning campus on February 17 from 7:00pm to 9pm (Lowman Concert Hall\, 52500 Temecula Road #38\, Idyllwild\, CA). \nThe event is the brainchild of Idyllwild Arts iconic Jazz Program founder\, Dr. Marshall Hawkins — who has played bass with many legends including The Miles Davis Quintet – as well as Dr. Daniel Bassin (IA Director of Orchestra) and will be hosted by the Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion and Belonging Board. \nThe theme of the event will be the “Replacement of the Drum\,” reflecting both the hardships and triumphs black Americans have experienced in the United States when drums\, a principal form of communication in Africa\, were taken away during slavery. Africans in America had to fashion different types of drums and percussion instruments from whatever materials they could gather\, profoundly reinventing and reshaping music for generations to come. \nThe concert will feature Dr. Marshall Hawkins Seahawk Modern Jazz Orchestra (MOJO)\, which he formed in 2002\, joining the school’s own Jazz and Classical music students\, faculty and alumni along with a plethora of professional performers for this highly anticipated event\, including jazz artist Sherry Williams\, jazz musician Bob Boss\, vocalist Yve Evans\, Nigerian artist Najite and Latin percussionist Ray Gonzales. \nListeners will be taken on a journey from Africa where music began with the drum through the new world and into modern music\, showcasing the unifying power of music. \nFor more information visit: https://idyllwildarts.org/event/black-history-concert/

DESCRIPTION:Love is a Drag: Hear the shocking 1962 jazz album performed live at Jazzville.\n\n\nJazzville presents a live tribute to the 1962 jazz album\, Love Is a Drag. Treasured by Bob Hope\, Liberace\, and Frank Sinatra (who gifted copies to friends). What made it unique and why did the album not reveal the singer and musicians? Why did the cover proclaim: For Adult Listeners Only\, and why did record stores keep it under the counter?.. \nThe album features a sincere crooner (a warm baritone in the style of Dick Haymes) interpreting jazz standards previously recorded only by women: My Man\, The Man I Love\, Mad About The Boy and nine similar tracks. How brave for a male signer to record these songs and do them so cooly without a hint of camp. And remember\, this was 1962. The word drag was code for gay\, yet everyone connected with the project was straight; the singer\, the band\, the producers… all straight. Quoting an article in JazzTimes\, “How the record ever happened still constitutes one of the unlikeliest tales in jazz.” \n50 years later we now know that the signer was Gene Howard\, a 1940s vocalist with the Stan Kenton band. The players on the album were LA’s top session guys including Al Viola\, the longtime guitarist for Frank Sinatra. \nWriter David Sedaris heard the album at a dinner party. He later commented\, “Even now the album is shocking. When a woman sings\, ‘He isn’t true/He beats me\, too/What can I do?’ you don’t really hear how\, well\, pathetic it is. It’s not fair that when a guy sings\, ‘I’m wild again\, beguiled again\, a simpering\, whimpering child again\,’ you think\, Ease up\, buddy\, while you accept those lines from a woman.” \nThe story of this album is fascinating on many levels. And I (Barry) have wanted to do a tribute show to this record for years. We presented this show last year and it was an instant hit. Once again we have the very best band to do this show in the same spirit that the album ensconces: The Adam Hersh Quartet and the brilliant vocalist Mark Kopitzke from Phat Cat Swinger fame. Special guest Lena Marie Cardinale sublimely recreates the voice of Yma Sumac\, the diva of exotica! Lena will wear a cape owned/worn by Yma.This music travels from mysterious to sublime\, even whimsical\, with sound effects\, bird calls and beautifully haunting vocalizations. Jazz meets the tropical jungle isles! \nExotica is a musical genre named after the 1957 Martin Denny album of the same name that was popular during the 1950s to mid-1960s with Americans who came of age during World War II. The album\, Exotica\, contained Denny’s most famous song\, Quiet Village. \nThe Hollywood Film Noirchestra is lead by visionary musician-arranger Skip Heller\, a desert-dweller with encyclopedic knowledge of music and musicians. DESCRIPTION:The Palm Springs AIDS Memorial Sculpture Task Force will hold a free community listening session to gather input about the proposed AIDS Memorial that the Task Force will donate to the City of Palm Springs. It will be installed in the Downtown Park. \nThe Task Force recently conducted a series of small-scale listening sessions to solicit community input about the proposed sculpture. This memorial will be a lasting tribute to the lives of those lost to HIV/AIDS so that they may never be forgotten. After this feedback is reviewed\, the Task Force will then present a new design for the memorial that embodies the feelings and sentiments of the community. By incorporating this important feedback and thoughts\, the Task Force hopes to ensure that the memorial fully reflects the diversity and sensitivities of the Palm Springs community.

He’ll next be seen on the Netflix comedy special STAND OUT: AN LGBTQ+ CELEBRATION\, premiering June 9 (with a documentary special to follow)\, and then on the upcoming series HISTORY OF THE WORLD 2\, the Mel Brooks sequel on Hulu\, playing Richard Nixon. \nIn 2016\, he portrayed Bernie Sanders in the wildly successful project TRUMP VS BERNIE\, which resulted in a sold out international tour\, a #1 comedy album (TRUMP VS BERNIE: LIVE IN BROOKLYN)\, and two 1 hour long comedy specials on Fusion: TRUMP VS BERNIE: DEBATE FOR AMERICA\, and TRUMP VS BERNIE: SHOUT THE VOTE\, a sketch special with James playing various characters. \nJames can be seen in the feature film LOVE AFTER LOVE (opposite Chris O’Dowd and Andie MacDowell). DESCRIPTION:In its 26th year as a fundraiser for City of Hope Cancer Center\, the Hike 4 Hope fundraiser is open to anyone of any age willing to hike\, but registration is required to participate. Details about each hike are available here. The minimum donation is $40 per hiker.  \nThere are six different hikes to choose from\, at various degrees of length and difficulty. No walk-up\, on-site registration will be available.
