SUMMARY:PALM SPRINGS MODERN COMMITTEE OFFERS RARE TOURS OF THE HOME OF DESERT MODERNISM ARCHITECT WILLIAM CODY
DESCRIPTION:See the Palm Springs home of desert modernist architect William Cody that served as an inspiration for the way he helped shape the look of the Coachella Valley on Feb. 25 during Modernism Week. Thirty-minute tours are still available starting at 12:30 p.m. through 4 p.m. \nPalm Springs Modern Committee (PS ModCom) in conjunction with TTK Represents offers this rare opportunity to see Cody’s architectural “think tank” built in 1952. Peter Blake Gallery of Laguna Beach has curated the interior of the home featuring all California Light and Space artists including Larry Bell\, Peter Alexander\, and De Wain Valentine interspersed next to three Desert X alumni artists —Lita Albuquerque\, Gisele Colon\, and Phillip K. Smith\, \n“This is the definitive light and space house\,” says Keith Markovitz of TTK Represents\, which has been representing architecturally significant homes in the desert since 2008. “It’s a totally transparent and translucent sort of interconnecting glass corridor house by Cody\, and probably one of the most dynamic post-war modern homes.” \nFrom nearly every vantage point in the house\, there are sight lines that blur the indoor-outdoor experience. The exhibition of art and collectible design accentuate the architecture of the home to create a unique immersive experience for the viewer. \nCody came to the desert in 1945 when he was 29 to make improvements to Nellie Coffman’s Desert Inn. By 1948\, Cody moved his practice to the desert where he left his imprint with such architectural gems as the Del Marcos Hotel\, the Thunderbird Country Club\, the Palm Springs Library\, and Eldorado in Indian Wells. \nIn a separate PS ModCom event during Modernism Week\, you can see Cody’s extraordinary work when you visit St. Theresa School where students showcase models of Palm Springs architectural landmarks. The free event occurs Feb. 21 and Feb. 23 from 1-3 p.m. each day. \nCody’s work is cited by the American Institute of Architects for significant buildings in Palm Springs\, Phoenix\, and Beverly Hills. After suffering a stroke at 57\, Cody died five years later in 1978. \nFor ticket information on the Cody house and to view the complete list of PS ModCom events\, visit psmodcom.org.
