Vietnam Veterans Stand Down

It is 50 years since ground troops came home from the Vietnam War and 50 years since the military draft ended in America. According to Department of Defense estimates only about 1/3 of Vietnam and Vietnam Era Veterans are still living. The Vietnam Veterans of the Coachella Valley, along with support from a number of Veterans Service organizations, including, but not limited to: Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc.; the American Legion; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Disabled American Veterans; and the Coachella Valley Airborne Association are participating in this event. The Stand Down will take place in Desert Hot Springs at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #1534 and all veterans, veterans’ families and all others who care are invited to this free event. There will be 60’s music, barbeque, and a Vietnam Era Huey-1 Medevac Helicopter as a back drop for this important event. An opening ceremony is scheduled for noon on Saturday, October 21st and a closing ceremony is scheduled for noon on Sunday, October 22nd. This will be an opportunity for veterans to celebrate that we are still here and as a remembrance to those who are not. It will be an opportunity to make new friends and possibly meet up with friends not seen since serving on active duty decades ago.

AN EVENING WITH STEVE ROSS hails the return of the “Crown Prince of New York Cabaret” (NY Times) to Coachella Valley Repertory’s annual Summer Cabaret Series. Ross will perform classics by music titans George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Stephen Sondheim and Noel Coward. A magician of the keyboard, Ross is as debonair as Fred Astaire, with the wit and sophistication of Coward and Porter. Acclaimed in London and adored in NYC, Ross proves that glamorous evenings still happen. The London Times hailed his show as “the smoothest cabaret act in the world.” Above all, all else, Steve Ross is just plain fun.

“Fitz is such a well-known personality for his longtime radio music programs, producing Fitz’s Jazz Café at the McCallum Theatre for 20 years, his songwriting and well received albums, and his bringing all his local musician friends together for two back-to-back memorable Fitz and Friends at the McCallum a few years ago, as well as producing the Gardens on El Paseo charity series for 17 years and raising more than $1 million for local charities,” said Steinway founder/CEO Ruth Moir. “But most of all, his putting the spotlight on local musicians has truly encouraged and inspired young people to pursue their music careers.
